What is Development Studies?
Development Studies is a multidisciplinary subject that incorporates all aspects of development throughout the world, more specifically, the developing world. The initial emphasis falls on the rather diverse concept of poverty and all its manifestations. This subject addresses the numerous global challenges that are faced in the developing world and identifies the possible solutions. Development Studies as a study field deals with development efforts through reform, capacity building and empowerment.

Why study Development Studies?
I decided to do a post graduate qualification in Development Studies after working in countries such as China, Sudan and Somalia, which are considered either developing or under-developed countries, where poverty, injustice and inequalities are rife. As a lawyer I was helping the empowered, but the needy were left behind. I developed a desire to empower the poor and abused, who could not fend for themselves. In 2002 I volunteered for a project in Hargeisa, Somali land, a war torn self declared independent region of Somalia proper, which at that point had a huge international NGO presence to rebuild the country and to assist this newfound democracy to develop in order to become self-sustainable. I worked as an aid worker in the field of health and education for HOPE worldwide, which focused on assisting the Hargeisa orphanage and maternity hospital. It was here that my dream was born, and studying Development Studies was the tool to accomplish this dream.
