Why study Education Management
I found that the best way or tool to help the poor and needy, the best way to empower them to help themselves was through Education. After working as a TEFL teacher in mostly developing countries, I felt I needed a formal qualification to give my experiences some legitimacy. The University of Pretoria offered a post graduate degree in Education Management, law and policy as a Distance learning course that would enable me to complete my studies irrespective where I was working. The course is specifically geared to train South African school principals in how to practically manage their schools, considering all the legal prescriptions, mainly found in the South African Schools Act. I realised that this qualification could enable me to contribute to the improvement of the school system by training school principals and school governing bodies with regards to the legal prescriptions on professional management and school governance. Illiteracy, unemployment and HIV/Aids are factors that adversely affect parents as responsible governors of their respective South African schools to affect quality teaching in learning. My focus is thus not to be a education manager of a particular school, but to facilitate training interventions that will assist education managers and parents that will in return lead to quality education.
