Working in Sudan |

In 2008, I received an e-mail....actually in my spam inbox....from a British lady who was looking for a TEFL teacher for her language institute in Khartoum, Sudan. Six weeks later I found myself in this uniquely diverse African country, ready for a new, albeit challenging, adventure. The language institute offered specialised tailor made ESL courses for government ministries and private companies such as petroleum companies and MTN. I was initially appointed as an English teacher, but upon my arrival I was asked to do in addition marketing on behalf of the institute. I had a driver take me to companies in the mornings to market our courses, and taught English in the afternoons and evenings. I worked 6 days a week, which proved to be very challenging, but utilised my free time well enough to experience and explore Khartoum. I stayed on the top floor of the school so was never really separated from the school environment.
